Painted by Li Shida, a native of Suzhou active around the turn of the seventeenth century, this scene captures the rituals of Lunar New Year's Day in a water village on Stone Lake, in China's Jiangnan region. Relatives and friends arrive to pay respects to their elders, boys set off firecrackers in the courtyard, and servants beat a gong to announce arriving guests, while inside the house New Year's couplets are brushed and hung to welcome the season. Blossoming white cherry trees signal spring's arrival over a scene Li Shida, painting his own home region, likely knew intimately.

The picture is so soft that the whole thing looks out of focus from six feet away. Half the shading in New Year's Day in a Village at Stone Lake has disappeared into solid black. There is a tear running right through the middle of it. I want a refund and nothing less will fix this.
