Li Tieguai, the 'Iron Crutch' immortal, is one of the most recognizable of the Daoist Eight Immortals, identified by his beggar's rags and the iron staff that gives him his name. According to legend, his spirit left his body to visit the deified Laozi, and when he returned he found his original body destroyed, forcing him to inhabit the corpse of a lame beggar instead. This painting, dating to the Yuan dynasty, shows him after taking possession of that new form, exhaling a small vaporous double of himself to demonstrate his power to send his spirit traveling.
