Liu Haichan Pillow

Liu Haichan was a Daoist immortal said to have abandoned a post as grand councilor during the Five Dynasties period to become a hermit and eventually attain immortality. He is traditionally shown as a youthful figure with bangs, playfully dangling a string of coins to tease a three-legged toad, and became venerated as a god of wealth and good fortune. This painting pairs with a companion depicting the immortal Li Tieguai, both part of the broader Chinese tradition of paintings honoring the Daoist immortals.
