This large hanging scroll is a Chinese ancestor portrait, painted between about 1796 and 1820 during the Jiaqing period of the Qing dynasty, meant to be displayed during rituals honoring a family's forebears. Arranged in the standard frontal format of the genre, it depicts six generations of a single family — thirteen men and seventeen women, plus a female servant — with men placed on the right and women on the left. Paintings like this served as both religious objects and family records, anchoring ancestor-veneration ceremonies central to traditional Chinese family life.
