Worn sewn to the chest or back of a formal court robe, this buzi identified its wearer's grade within the strictly ordered civil or military hierarchy of Ming or Qing dynasty China. A specific bird or animal was assigned to each of the nine ranks in both the civil and military branches of officialdom, turning an official's badge into an immediate, legible marker of status. Such badges were produced in embroidery or in fine silk-tapestry weave, according to the wearer's means.
