This is a buzi, the badge of rank that officials in Ming and Qing dynasty China wore sewn to the chest and back of their formal court robes. A codified system of birds for civil officials and animals for military officers, arranged across nine grades, let anyone at court read a wearer's position at a glance. Rank badges such as this one remain valued today both as historical artifacts of Chinese imperial bureaucracy and as fine examples of embroidered or woven silk textile art.
