This square insignia, known as a buzi or mandarin square, once marked its wearer's rank within the vast civil or military bureaucracy of Ming or Qing dynasty China. Sewn to the front and back of an official's formal robe, such badges used a codified system of birds for civil officials and animals for military officers, with nine grades in each hierarchy. Rank badges survive today both as historical documents of imperial administration and as accomplished examples of Chinese textile art.
Jacquard-woven both sides in soft, durable yarn; insert included.

It came packed so well that opening it took ten minutes. The smallest marks in rank badge buzi are still visible, which is the entire point. The condition on arrival was flawless, right down to the corners. Thank you for making something this good.
One corner was dented and the seller offered me a five dollar credit. It is hard to make out the smaller parts of rank badge buzi from more than a few feet away. The insert is sold separately, which they could make clearer before checkout. Two stars for effort and nothing more.
My order came a day early, which never happens. It has become the thing guests comment on first. Everything down here fades in the heat, and this has held through an entire summer. I am pleased with how this turned out.
Thank you so much, this made our morning. Enjoy it, and send a photo if you ever feel like it.
I would buy from this shop again without much thought. The colors in rank badge buzi came through almost exactly as I hoped.
It came packed so well that opening it took ten minutes. The tones across rank badge buzi are even and true right to the corners. The fringe on this pillow is neat and has stayed that way through two washes…
