A golden pheasant, resplendent in profile, was the prescribed badge of a second-rank civil official under the Ming and Qing dynasty rank system, one step below the crane reserved for the very highest grade. Woven or embroidered in silk, these badges were sewn to a formal court robe's chest and back, making an official's standing legible at a glance. The pheasant's vivid plumage made it a particularly striking emblem among the nine birds used to mark China's civil officialdom.
Jacquard-woven as a soft, double-sided tapestry throw with fringed edges — a warm layer for the sofa or bed.
