A pair of mandarin ducks, emblems of fidelity and marital harmony in Chinese culture, marked a seventh-rank civil official under the Ming and Qing dynasty system of court insignia. Each of the nine civil grades carried its own bird, worn as a badge sewn to the chest and back of a formal robe to announce a wearer's place in the imperial hierarchy. The mandarin duck's gentle, domestic symbolism contrasts with the more commanding birds — cranes and pheasants — reserved for higher-ranking officials.
Jacquard-woven both sides in soft, durable yarn; insert included.
