The crane held the top position among the nine birds used to distinguish rank among Chinese civil officials, worn only by those of the first and most senior grade. Long associated with longevity and celestial travel in Chinese thought, the crane made a fitting emblem for the pinnacle of the civil bureaucracy. Badges bearing this bird were sewn to the chest and back of a formal court robe.
