This badge combines a bird with flowering branches in the format of a Chinese civil-official rank badge, or buzi, the insignia sewn to the front and back of a court robe to announce its wearer's grade within the nine-tier hierarchy of imperial officialdom. Each civil rank was assigned its own bird species, from the crane at the top down to the paradise flycatcher at the ninth grade. Without a firmly identified bird species, the specific rank this badge once signified is uncertain, but its purpose as a marker of official status is clear.
