A silver pheasant, poised in profile amid clouds and waves, marked a fifth-rank civil official in the Ming and Qing dynasty system of court rank badges. Birds denoted civil office while animals marked military rank, a distinction that let anyone at court read a wearer's role and standing at a glance. This badge would have been sewn to the front of a formal robe, its counterpart stitched to the back.
