A woven or embroidered lion identified a second-rank military official under the Ming dynasty's system of court insignia, in which each of the nine official grades was assigned its own bird or animal. Badges like this one were sewn to the chest and back of a formal robe, making rank instantly legible within the strict hierarchy of the imperial bureaucracy. The lion's bold, stylized form reflects the decorative conventions particular to Ming-dynasty rank-badge weaving, distinct from the softer renderings favored in later Qing examples.
