This lithograph belongs to Odilon Redon's Temptation of Saint Anthony series, his visual response to Gustave Flaubert's novel of the hallucinating desert hermit. Flaubert's text conjures impossible vessels and winged, bat-like creatures among the saint's temptations, and Redon translated passages like these into some of the strangest inventions in Symbolist printmaking. Rendered in the velvety blacks Redon called his noirs, the image asks to be read as a dream rather than a description.
