A Flower Piece — Antique Botanical Print

“Flower piece” was the standard eighteenth-century English term for an elaborate floral still life, a genre perfected in the Dutch Republic over the previous hundred years and epitomized by Jan van Huysum, whose meticulously observed bouquets sold for more than paintings by Rembrandt in his own lifetime. Van Huysum worked from real cut flowers gathered across an entire growing season, so that many of his signature arrangements combine blooms that could never actually have flowered together — a beautiful impossibility. This print reproduces a mezzotint made after his work by the English engraver Richard Earlom, whose reproductive prints helped spread van Huysum's compositions to audiences who would never see the originals.
