This polychrome woodblock print, made during the Jiaqing period (1796–1820) of China's Qing dynasty, illustrates the “Classic of Mountains and Seas” (Shan Hai Jing), an ancient Chinese text blending geography, mythology and accounts of strange creatures and distant lands. Popular illustrated editions like this one brought the fantastical beings and legendary landscapes of the ancient classic to a wide readership in Qing-dynasty China. The original is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
