The peony has been celebrated as China's king of flowers, or fuguihua, since the Tang dynasty, when the flower was so prized at the imperial court that commoners risked punishment for wearing embroidered peony motifs of their own. Its lush, many-petalled blooms in shades of red and pink became lasting symbols of prosperity, honour, and social standing, a reputation that made the flower a favourite subject for poets as well as painters. Chinese literati often paired the two arts directly, inscribing a short verse, or quatrain, alongside a painted spray of peonies as part of a long tradition of uniting poetry, calligraphy, and image in a single work.
