The Story in the Margin

English animal painter George Stubbs etched this sleeping leopard in 1791, drawing on his close study of animal anatomy and his access to London's menageries, where exotic animals brought from across the globe were kept as curiosities. Stubbs was among the first printmakers to use soft-ground etching, a technique that let him transfer the texture of an actual drawing onto the plate to capture the roughness of bark, rock, and fur. The impression is held at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
