This “Caprice,” painted around 1818–19 by Francisco de Goya (1746–1828), belongs to the fantastical, often unsettling imagery the Spanish master turned to in his later years, following the same spirit of invention and social critique found in his famous print series Los Caprichos. Goya, court painter turned unflinching chronicler of Spain's turmoil, spent his final years producing visionary, loosely brushed works far removed from his earlier formal portraits. This painting is held in the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Agen in France.
