Alton sits at the southern tip of Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire's largest lake, with its village of Alton Bay forming a natural harbor that became a popular steamboat landing in the 19th century. Excursion steamers carried tourists from the railhead at Alton Bay across the lake to resorts and summer communities throughout the Lakes Region, making the town an important gateway for the vacationers who flocked to New Hampshire's lake country each summer. This dual identity, part working town and part tourist gateway, made Alton and Alton Bay a natural subject for the detailed maps that catalogued New Hampshire's growing tourism industry alongside its traditional industries.

Everything about this went better than I hoped. It has come through a summer of open windows and humidity without a problem. The swing from summer humidity to furnace season is brutal here and it has not budged.
My husband spotted this months ago and I finally gave in. The tones across Alton and Alton Bay are even and true right to the corners. Our driver leaves everything at the end of a long gravel driveway and it still arrived in perfect shape. My only regret is not ordering sooner.
It looks like something out of a museum shop, in the best possible way. My daughter recognized Alton and Alton Bay from her art class and was thrilled. Highly recommended if you are hesitating.
This is the rare purchase that looks better in person than online. I have been hunting for a good version of Alton and Alton Bay for two years.
This is a solid buy at a slightly high price.
