Apian World Map — Antique World Map Print

Peter Apian, a German mathematician, astronomer, and cartographer, published his first world map, the Typus Orbis Universalis, in 1520, building directly on the geography of Martin Waldseemüller's landmark 1507 map. Four years later he released his Cosmographia, an illustrated introduction to astronomy, geography, and navigation so popular that it remained the standard scholarly text on the subject well into the 17th century, complete with paper volvelles, rotating discs that let readers calculate astronomical positions by hand. Until Waldseemüller's original map resurfaced in 1901, it was Apian's map that scholars credited as the first to use the name "America."
