Painted in 1798 by Charles Meynier (1763–1832), this monumental canvas personifies Apollo, god of light, eloquence, poetry and the fine arts, alongside Urania, muse of astronomy, in the grand Neoclassical style fashionable in France at the close of the 18th century. Meynier, trained within the Neoclassical tradition of Jacques-Louis David's era, specialized in allegorical and mythological decoration for French royal and public buildings, filling his canvases with idealized figures drawn from classical antiquity.
