Atlas Type Lafreri — Antique Art Print

This map belongs to the tradition of the Lafreri atlas, named for Antonio Lafreri, a Burgundian-born engraver and publisher who settled in Rome around 1540 and became one of the first to bind individually purchased maps into custom, made-to-order atlases for wealthy clients. Predating Abraham Ortelius's more famous 1570 atlas by decades, these Lafreri-type collections drew on the finest Italian cartographers of the day, including Giacomo Gastaldi and Paolo Forlani, and today represent some of the only surviving copies of many 16th-century Italian maps. No two Lafreri atlases were bound identically, since each one was assembled to its buyer's individual taste.
