The Snowy Owl is a powerful predator of the Arctic tundra, hunting lemmings, hares, and waterfowl in daylight as well as darkness during the long polar summer, and irrupting south into the northern United States in years when prey is scarce. Females are noticeably larger and more heavily barred than males, a detail Audubon rendered faithfully in this plate even though he posed his subject perched on a branch, a setting the treeless tundra rarely offers. The engraving was produced by Robert Havell Jr. for The Birds of America, published around 1831.
