Because bamboo stays green through winter and yields without breaking under snow or wind, Chan Buddhist monks and literati painters used it as a metaphor for principled flexibility rather than rigid resistance; one of the best-known surviving examples, a hanging scroll by the Yuan-dynasty monk-painter Puming, shows a stand of bamboo caught mid-motion, leaves streaming sideways in a gust. This subject was painted and repainted across dynasties, both as a technical exercise in ink brushwork and as a personal statement of character.
