Berthe Morisot frequently painted women in private, domestic moments — dressing, arranging their hair, or, as here, at their toilette — subjects drawn from the world of bourgeois femininity she had privileged access to as a woman artist in nineteenth-century Paris. Rendered in soft, silvery tones with rapid, visible brushstrokes, "Woman at Her Toilette" exemplifies Morisot's mature Impressionist style, in which the subject often seems to dissolve into shimmering light and fabric. Morisot, who exhibited alongside Monet, Renoir, and Degas, is now recognized as one of the central figures of French Impressionism.
