Ali Masjid sits at the narrowest point of the Khyber Pass, the historic gateway between Afghanistan and the Indian subcontinent, named for a shrine built in memory of Ali, cousin of the Prophet Muhammad. Long before its Islamic-era mosque and forts, the pass was a center of Gandharan Buddhist civilization, and Buddhist stupas and sculpture, like the nearby Sphola Stupa, still survive from as early as the 2nd century AD. The strategic pass was fought over repeatedly during the 19th-century Anglo-Afghan Wars, when British forces garrisoned its heights.
