Although often filed among East Asian bird prints generally, this polychrome woodblock print is Chinese rather than Japanese, made in the city of Suzhou during the first half of the 1700s. It shows a single bird perched on a flowering pomegranate branch, printed using the separate carved color blocks that Suzhou workshops perfected during the Qing dynasty. Prints like this one marked a shift from privately bound illustrated books toward affordable single-sheet pictures meant to be hung on the wall, part of the city's flourishing urban visual culture.
