Chambers of commerce and railroad companies were among the biggest patrons of bird's-eye-view mapmaking, since a handsome panorama of a bustling, well-ordered town was excellent advertising for attracting new settlers, investors, and rail traffic. Publishers would often print the views on speculation, canvassing a town for subscribers before committing an artist to the weeks of fieldwork required. The resulting maps now serve historians as an invaluable record of exactly which buildings, mills, and rail lines existed in a given town at a specific moment in the 19th century.
