Bird's-eye-view maps served a very different purpose than ordinary street maps: rather than aiding navigation, they were designed to be hung on a wall as a portrait of civic achievement. A finished view typically included a numbered key identifying churches, schools, factories, and prominent homes, turning the map into an advertisement for the town's institutions as much as a record of its geography. Local newspapers often ran subscription drives to fund a town's view, with residents paying in advance for the pride of seeing their home immortalized in print.
