Bristol sits at the southern end of Newfound Lake in Grafton County, New Hampshire, its position where the Newfound River drops toward the Pemigewasset providing water power for 19th-century mills that produced gloves, textiles, and other manufactured goods. The clear waters of Newfound Lake, one of the cleanest in New Hampshire, drew summer visitors even in the 1800s, adding tourism to the town's mill-based economy. Bristol's combination of water power, lake scenery, and rail access made it a well-documented stop in the illustrated maps and gazetteers that catalogued New Hampshire's Grafton County during the period.
