George Brookshaw (about 1751-1823) began his career as a fashionable London cabinetmaker, painting neoclassical furniture for clients including the Prince of Wales, before reinventing himself in midlife as a botanical illustrator. Between 1804 and 1812 he published Pomona Britannica, a lavish folio of 90 hand-colored plates depicting 256 fruit varieties grown in the royal gardens at Hampton Court, Kensington Palace, and Blackheath, still regarded as one of the finest fruit-illustration works ever produced. His grape plates, rendered with the same decorative precision he once brought to painted furniture, capture the plump, sun-warmed clusters that made viticulture a favorite subject of Georgian-era garden culture.
