Bryozoans (2) — Antique Natural History Print

Bryozoans, or "moss animals," are colonial invertebrates built from thousands of microscopic zooids, each barely half a millimetre long, sharing one skeleton and filtering plankton from the water through a crown of ciliated tentacles called a lophophore. Colonies take encrusting, branching, or moss-like forms and turn up on rocks, shells, and seaweed in both oceans and fresh water. Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur gave the order Bryozoa two plates, portraying genera including Cristatella and Flustra among its studies of colonial symmetry.
