Each bryozoan colony is a lace-like structure raised by thousands of genetically identical zooids acting as one, secreting a shared skeleton and filtering plankton from passing water with tentacled lophophores. Close to 6,000 species are known today, from encrusting sheets on kelp fronds to freestanding, moss-like tufts on lake beds and ocean floors worldwide. Their modular geometry appealed to Ernst Haeckel, who gave the order Bryozoa two plates in Kunstformen der Natur, his 1899-1904 survey of nature's ornamental forms.
