The Story in the Margin

“Al Dolo” is one of the etched Vedute (Views) Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768) produced between 1740 and 1743, when a lull in painting commissions led him to experiment with etching for the first time. This plate depicts Dolo, a town on the Brenta Canal between Venice and Padua known for its canal locks, a favorite subject Canaletto returned to several times across the series. The Vedute prints were commissioned in part by his patron and dealer Joseph Smith, the British consul in Venice.

Printed with archival giclée inks on smooth, acid-free 220 gsm gallery-grade fine-art paper; available in multiple sizes.
