The Story in the Margin
This etching, showing the canal locks (or “porte”) at Dolo on the Brenta Canal, belongs to Canaletto's celebrated Vedute (Views) series of 1740–43. Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768), already Europe's most sought-after painter of Venice, took up etching during a quiet stretch in his painting career, and the locks at Dolo — where boats were raised and lowered along the canal toward Padua — became one of his favorite recurring subjects. Only 33 etchings survive from this series.
