The Story in the Margin
This etching depicts Mestre, the mainland town facing Venice across the lagoon, and belongs to Canaletto's Vedute (Views) series produced between 1740 and 1743. Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768), already famous across Europe for his painted views of Venice, turned briefly to etching during a slow period for commissions, applying the same close observation of architecture and daily life to these smaller, more intimate prints. The plate is held today in the Art Institute of Chicago.
