The Story in the Margin
Painted around 1754 near the end of Canaletto's years working in England, “St. Paul's Cathedral” is the only close-up view he made of London's great church, shown from the northwest as the setting sun catches its marble facade and the statue of Queen Anne nearby. Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768), already celebrated across Europe for his Venetian vedute, spent nearly a decade in London painting the city for English patrons, including Thomas Hollis, who commissioned this view. It is held today at the Yale Center for British Art.
Printed with archival giclée inks on smooth, acid-free 220 gsm gallery-grade fine-art paper; available in multiple sizes.
