The Story in the Margin
“La Torre di Malghera” is one of the most admired plates from Canaletto's Vedute (Views), the etching series he dedicated to his patron Joseph Smith after Smith's appointment as British consul in Venice in 1744. Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768) shows the tower of Malghera, on the mainland facing Venice, glowing in bright sunlight against the distant Euganean Hills, with fishermen working the riverbank below — a rare, quietly restrained composition within his etched work.
