Francisco de Goya painted The Junta of the Philippines around 1815 to record a shareholders' assembly of the Royal Company of the Philippines, presided over by King Ferdinand VII. Instead of flattering the dignitaries, Goya dissolved them into a vast, shadowy hall of cold light — one of his coolest and quietly most subversive official commissions. The original hangs in the Musée Goya in Castres, France.
