This plate from Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660) lays out the Ptolemaic system in flat plan, the Earth fixed at the center and the Moon, Sun, planets and fixed stars arranged in the nested spheres that had defined the geocentric universe since antiquity. Ptolemy himself appears seated in one corner of the border, in keeping with Cellarius's habit of pairing each cosmological plate with portraits of its originating astronomer. Engraved and hand-colored in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age, it remains one of the clearest visual summaries of pre-Copernican astronomy ever produced.
