Cellarius Celestial Chart (14) — Antique Celestial Print

This diagram from Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660) sets a finely engraved terrestrial globe inside a cage of celestial circles — horizon, meridian, tropics, colures — the coordinate framework early modern astronomers used to fix the position of any star or planet in the sky. It is one of several plates in the atlas devoted to the instruments and geometry of observational astronomy rather than to the constellations themselves, reflecting how seriously Cellarius treated the technical side of his subject. The whole composition is bordered in the ornate Baroque manner, with cherubs and allegorical figures softening what is otherwise a rigorously geometric image.
