This plate from Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660) is drawn from the classical tradition associated with Aratus, the ancient Greek poet whose Phaenomena was one of the earliest surviving descriptions of the constellations, here reworked into a ringed diagram of planets and zodiac signs around a central globe of the Earth. It shows how deliberately Cellarius reached back past Ptolemy to the earliest roots of Western astronomy, presenting them alongside the most modern seventeenth-century theories elsewhere in the same book. Cherub-borne banners and robed astronomers with globes and dividers complete the Baroque frame that unites every plate in the atlas.
