This plate from the Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660) is one of Cellarius's composite hemispheres, overlaying the southern constellations directly onto a map of the southern lands as they were known in the mid-seventeenth century, including the still largely speculative outline of Terra Australis Incognita. It reflects the moment when celestial cartography and terrestrial exploration were treated as a single subject rather than separate disciplines. Robed astronomers and their instruments occupy the lower corners, a recurring device Cellarius used throughout the atlas to root the science in the practice of observation. The plate exemplifies the Dutch Golden Age habit of turning technical cartography into decorative art.
