This is one of Andreas Cellarius's scenographic plates from the Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660), presenting the ancient Ptolemaic system in a dramatic oblique view rather than the flat diagrams used elsewhere in the atlas, with the spheres of the Moon, Sun and planets nested around a stationary Earth. The geocentric model it depicts had governed astronomy since antiquity and still framed Church-sanctioned cosmology in Cellarius's own century, even as the Copernican and Tychonic alternatives gained ground. As in the rest of the atlas, the diagram is set within an elaborate Baroque border populated by cherubs, drapery and robed astronomers at their instruments.
