This plate from Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica (Amsterdam, 1660) illustrates the Tychonic system, Tycho Brahe's compromise model in which the Earth remains fixed at the center while the Sun and Moon circle it and the other planets orbit the Sun in turn. The design is bordered in Cellarius's signature Baroque manner, with cherubs and robed astronomers framing the diagram and consulting globes below. First engraved for Janssonius's original edition, the plate was later reissued by the Amsterdam publishers Gerard Valk and Petrus Schenk around 1708, extending the atlas's popularity into the following century.
