Andreas Cellarius, a Dutch-German schoolmaster who eventually became rector of a Latin school in Hoorn, spent years compiling the Harmonia Macrocosmica, a celestial atlas published in Amsterdam in 1660. Rather than settling on a single model of the cosmos, Cellarius illustrated the rival systems of Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe side by side, each rendered across a double-folio engraving embellished with cherubs and astronomical instruments. Nearly four centuries later, it remains one of the most reproduced and admired works in the history of star charting.
