This plate comes from the Harmonia Macrocosmica, a celestial atlas published in Amsterdam in 1660 by the Dutch-German cartographer Andreas Cellarius. Cellarius spent his career as a schoolmaster and rector in Hoorn, but his atlas became one of the most celebrated works in the history of astronomical illustration, often called the most beautiful celestial atlas ever produced. Its 29 double-folio engravings map the competing cosmological systems of Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe, framed by elaborate borders of cherubs, astronomers, and scientific instruments.
