This plate from Andreas Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica (Amsterdam, 1660) sets out Tycho Brahe's system in flat plan: the Earth motionless at the center, the Sun and Moon orbiting it directly, and the five known planets circling the Sun in turn. It was Brahe's attempt to keep the Earth still, as scripture and centuries of astronomy demanded, while still accounting for the planetary motions that the newer Copernican model explained more elegantly. The hand-applied color and gold-toned inks typical of the finest surviving copies of this atlas are part of why plates like this one are still prized well beyond their scientific content.
