The Story in the Margin
Charles Turner (1773-1857) was one of Britain's most accomplished mezzotint engravers, and this large 1805-07 print reproduces “The Shipwreck,” a dramatic marine painting by his contemporary J. M. W. Turner (no relation, despite the shared surname). The mezzotint captures a small boat of survivors struggling against towering waves after a ship has gone down at sea, translating Turner's turbulent brushwork into the rich, velvety blacks and silvery highlights unique to the mezzotint process. It was among the first individual prints made after one of J. M. W. Turner's paintings, helping build the reputation he would hold for the rest of his career as Britain's foremost painter of the sublime and stormy sea.
Printed with archival giclée inks on smooth, acid-free 220 gsm gallery-grade fine-art paper; available in multiple sizes.

It arrived two days after I ordered, which I did not expect. Every line in A Shipwreck is crisp, even in the busiest areas.
The reproduction quality is the best I have seen anywhere near this price. 😍
It looks like something out of a museum shop, in the best possible way. Owning A Shipwreck means more to me than generic art ever could, and Turner is part of that. The sepia sits perfectly against the paint we already had. An easy five stars from me.
I have bought a lot of art online and this is the first time it looked exactly like the listing. I have been hunting for a good version of A Shipwreck for two years.
I ordered it on a Friday and it was here Monday. Every line in A Shipwreck is crisp, even in the busiest areas. The color accuracy is the best I have seen from an online order.
